Synopsis: Star-Crossed Lovers who commit suicide are reborn as twins.
Takashima Kouyou and Shiroyama Yuu are fraternal twins, who don’t look anything alike. Ever since he was born, Kouyou has always been protected and shadowed by Yuu’s strong and protective behavior. Seventeen years have passed since their birth. The same older brother who had once loved him now hates him with immense passion. What went wrong between these two twins? The events that unfold inside a Catholic Boarding School decide the fate for the two boys.
The honey blond lowered his head as he approached the lean figure of his older twin. He had a very good idea about the influence Yuu had over his followers, and he could only hope, perhaps in futile, that he could make Yuu realize that whatever he was doing was wrong. Kouyou kept praying over and over in his mind that Yuu would let Takanori escape unscathed.
Yuu didn’t budge an inch from his position as Kouyou went to stand in front of him; Takanori’s screams and pleading whimpers, followed by the dull thuds of punches that landed on his fragile body slashing through the blond’s heart. A dull pain throbbed in his chest as he remembered the old Yuu, who was so sweet, kind and tender. Kouyou could never, ever really match this new, vile persona with his own brother anymore.
“Yuu, why are you doing this?” Kouyou asked desperately, avoiding looking into those fathomless beady black eyes, afraid he might get lost in them and never find his way out. He was scared, not because he was sure that he was going to end up getting hurt, but because he suddenly realized that he didn’t feel the intense urge to hold Yuu and beg him... because all of a sudden, his twin seemed to be out of reach; untouchable and so far away, even though he was standing here before him. It seemed as if everything he said went straight through the Yuu he used to know and into the mind of something more dark and sinister.
“Why do you think I’m doing this?” Yuu snorted even though he wasn’t amused in the slightest bit. He could feel his heart slowly crumbling into pieces when he noticed the fear in Kouyou’s eyes, those aureate orbs that once displayed nothing but pure affection whenever the blond looked at him; those hands that always wrapped around his neck as he sang that he loved his older brother; those full lips that always kissed his cheek even though they were the same gender.
Tears were already burning at the contours of Yuu’s eyes, but he definitely wouldn’t let his male pride be destroyed by something as crying in front of everyone, especially right now. “Why do you think there are gangs in school?” he rolled his obsidian orbs, dumping the cigarette he held in between his lithe fingers carelessly onto the spotless floor. “You should fuck off before you get beaten up like that thing.” he said, nodding his head towards Takanori. “I won’t intervene like last time.”
Kouyou looked at Yuu’s face in disbelief, like his older twin had gone crazy. The Yuu who had cried his heart out for hours because he had committed murder didn’t exist anymore. Kouyou couldn’t remember the last time they even talked like brothers. The memories of his twin’s beautiful smile was already starting to fade, as it had been ages since the younger twin had seen it. This Yuu was a complete stranger to the honey blond. He felt a surge of untamed fear engulf him as he realized that the man before him was drifting further and further away from him, and there was nothing he could do about it. This Yuu was strong and confident, but in the wrong way, and this Yuu had a terrible hatred running through his veins, the source of which was keping the blond wondering.
“But Yuu... it’s not right. Takanori just joined school. He doesn’t deserve this.” The younger twin tried his best to make his brother see the sense of all this, how horribly wrong it all was. “Please let him go.” Kouyou pleaded, wishing desperately that Yuu could see it through. But he could also see that the raven wasn’t buying any of it, that he was content with whatever he was doing and he didn’t have any intention to listen to his puny weakling of a brother.
“Fine,” Yuu rolled his eyes. “I’ll let him go. But I ain’t letting your selfishness win, you hear me.” Yuu reached forward and with his hand grabbed the honey blond’s chin between his thumb and index finger and whispered, “Not this time.”
Yuu’s hot breath played on Kouyou’s soft lips, making the younger twin gasp due to the sudden proximity. This was the closest Yuu had been to him in ages. He knew he should’ve been glad that his older twin hadn't abandoned him and was touching him at the very least, but there was something more to the whole gesture—something wild and predatory about his brother’s attitude that Kouyou couldn’t put his finger on. The blond could feel the uncontrollable shivers that wracked his fragile body as Yuu leaned in closer; closer than he’d been in ages.
The raven-haired twin moved forward in order to close the distance between their bodies. The warmth radiating from Kouyou’s body made a wave of arousal spread like fiery tendrils throughout his flesh and blood. He desperately wanted to taste those plush, pouty lips, the nine-year old memory of Kouyou’s innocent kiss in the warehouse was still embedded in his reminiscence like it had been branded with iron. Nervously licking his lips, he moved his obsidian orbs away from those sinful lips to his younger twin’s eyes.
“I want something in return.” Yuu spoke, his voice too husky for his liking.
Yuu’s tender touch on his chin felt like fire, like he was being marked with the hottest iron. Kouyou couldn’t comprehend what made Yuu look so intimidating at the moment yet somehow alluring and he felt his heart pound like a crazy jackhammer against his chest, ready to break out of the ribcage. The honey blond’s lips parted instinctively as he took a sharp inhale of oxygen, his throat constricting on its own accord.
Kouyou gulped once and jerked his head slightly, in an attempt free himself from the deadly clutch his twin brother had on his chin. But Yuu only grabbed him back, this time his grip was stronger, making the blond wince as the pain shot through his nerves. The older twin snaked an arm possessively around Kouyou’s small waist and pulled him towards his searing body. If Kouyou could let that girl, whatever her name was, hug him, then he was able to embrace his twin too, right? After all, Yuu had been with Kouyou from the time he had been brought into this world as nothing but tiny cells.
From the corner of his eye, Yuu observed his gang. The delinquents who were beating up the Matsumoto kid didn’t bother turning around to give him a backward glance, except for Yutaka who had his back against a locker shifting his eyes between him and the rest of the gang. Yutaka forcefully punched one of the locker doors, making it bang open. The open locker door, obscured Kouyou and Yuu from everyone else. Giving a mental thank you to Yutaka, the raven continued to stroke Kouyou’s cheek which had turned a delicious pink, not bothering to open his mouth to voice out his demand.
“What do you want, Yuu?” Kouyou asked shakily, his voice barely above a terrified whisper, unable to take the bone-chilling silence anymore.
Yuu stared at the honey blond, running a callous digit along Kouyou’s bow-shaped lips. Yuu could clearly see that his brother was uncomfortable. The raven felt mischievous, wanting to tease his younger twin further. If only they had been in their room right now, he would have grabbed Kouyou and kissed him senseless, tasting every nook and cranny of his luscious mouth. But he couldn’t do that, not in a catholic school’s corridor. No matter how partial the management was towards Yuu, they would never allow him to get away with this. Clearing his mind of his lustful thoughts, he finally decided to answer Kouyou, who had already started squirming under his vice-like grip.
“You have something I want,” Yuu whispered into Kouyou’s ear, letting his beautifully pierced lips wet the honey blond’s sensitive ear lobe. “Something I’ve desperately wanted as long as I can remember. Give me that and I’ll let Matsumoto go.”
Kouyou felt everything around him dissipating into blurred shadows, until the only thing he could feel was Yuu’s possessive arm around his fragile waist, holding him in place and his dark, sultry stare that bored through him. The blond shuddered as he felt the wetness of Yuu’s mouth on his earlobe and his breath hitched in his throat. He couldn’t really comprehend what his twin was referring to. As far as his delusional mind allowed, he couldn’t remember anything special that he possessed, nothing that Yuu wanted so badly.
His own twin brother felt so alien to him at the moment that he simply wanted to wake up from this strange dream. Nothing reached his ears anymore, not even the piercing screams of Takanori that echoed throughout the corridor. He could only see Yuu, smell Yuu and Yuu was the only thing that he felt.
“I...” Kouyou began, and a whimper left him when Yuu turned their bodies, only to have Kouyou being locked between his older twin’s heated, aroused body and the cold, steel locker behind. The honey blond wasn’t sure what his brother had in mind, but this was definitely not what he had expected.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” The blond managed to utter in a single breath and winced as Yuu hissed in his ear.
The single word rushed through Kouyou’s veins like venom as the honey blond stiffened under his brother’s hold.
Yuu bit the plump flesh of his lower lip, slightly frustrated. He was getting annoyed with Kouyou’s innocence, even though that was what which had made him fall for his younger twin so irrevocably in the first place. He could feel his arousal slowly fading as insecurity and anger replaced his emotions. Would there be a miracle which would help him have his brother? And if he did get him, what would happen? Would he be labelled a sinner and forced to walk hell for eternity? Was Kouyou going to be punished due to his immoral thoughts and feelings? Yuu may act as if religion was nothing but a lunatic’s prattle, but deep down, he believed in those damn sermons they were made to listen to.
During the entire time when Sister Alphonsa had talked about the punishments given to mortals who indulged themselves in homoerotic relationships and incest, the raven had been observing Kouyou. His younger twin had been holding on to each and every word so dutifully that Yuu had felt a terrible pain shoot through his entire body, as if someone had replaced his blood with boiling, molten lava. Why couldn’t God understand his feelings? If having such feelings for one’s own brother was wrong, then why did God create such abhorrent feelings in the first place? Why? Why? WHY?
“I want you to fucking stop seeing that girl, the one whom you’re glued to.” Yuu growled in Kouyou’s ear, trying his best to suppress the tragic feelings that overflowed to the point of suffocation.
Before the rage could engulf his senses, Kouyou felt nothing but terror and confusion, as he realized what Yuu was implying. Hikari had been his best friend, the only person he could depend on in this terrible place he had to call his home. The only reason he could smile once or twice every morning, because if Hikari didn’t exist, he was sure his life would be just another collage of darkness and pain.
Ever since he ended up in this hell hole they called school, he had almost forgotten how it felt to smile, how it felt to be swathed in a loving embrace. Hikari gave him that; the things Yuu failed to do. There was no way he was going to stop seeing her, not even when Yuu was practically threatening him, not even when Yuu was hovering over him with his dark, penetrating gaze that seemed so seductive.
“What are you talking about?” The honey blond snarled, his eyes flaring in anger. He wasn’t the type of person who allowed anger to take over his emotions easily, but when it came to the only girl he’d trusted enough to hold his heart, he wasn’t going to show his defencelessness.
Kouyou winced when Yuu’s glare only hardened, but he firmly held his ground. His brows furrowed as he finally mustered enough courage to plant his frail palms on Yuu’s broad chest and shove him backwards.
Yuu felt something snap within him. His brother, his precious brother, the only one whom he had ever loved in his entire miserable existence had at last pushed him away. Kouyou had finally taken the first step towards hating him. The set of events for the younger twin to completely abhor him had finally been set in motion. The raven-haired boy suddenly broke into laughter, laughter which held no hint of happiness, as he clutched his stomach in pretended agony that the humourless laugh brought him. He could clearly see the shocked look on Kouyou’s face, like he was looking at a deranged madman.
Yuu stepped away from the honey blond and walked in the direction of the gang, leaving Kouyou confused and fumbling with himself.
Out of everything that could happen, Kouyou hadn’t expected this. He let his trembling body press against the wall for some support, because all of a sudden, he felt like all the energy that he had mustered up to confront Yuu had been sucked away, leaving him empty and shaky. The blond’s sweaty palms tried to gain a good grip on the rough surface as he watched the retreating figure of his older twin brother, walking with brisk, confident steps to where the commotion was taking place, Takanori’s voice now only a muffled whimper.
“ENOUGH!” Yuu’s authoritative voice broke through the entire corridor, causing an involuntary tremor to run past the blond’s body and making the delinquents stop immediately. “Leave that bitch and get your asses back to where they belong.” he ordered.
The delinquents immediately started moving away, except for one. Naoya, the latest addition to the gang, tall and bald with multiple scars on his ugly face. This man was rumored to have been a dangerous right hand man to the boss of his previous school gang. His influential parents had covered up everything and made him join St. Michael’s Academy instead, in order to ensure that their son would never get into trouble.
Yuu frowned, an intimidating expression on his face, making the single rule breaker’s blood turn cold. For some reason, Naoya, who hadn’t been afraid of anyone in his previous school, actually felt a spark of fear within him as he faced the underworld boss of St. Michael’s Academy.
“Didn’t you hear me, Naoya? Fuck off.” Yuu whispered in an icy tone, eyes reduced into slits.
“But boss, it ain’t fair,” Naoya spoke back stubbornly, clearly not willing to step down. The boss of the previous school had always let his underlings beat up any kid they cornered and steal all their money. The bald one knew that the Matsumoto kid was rich and had been hoping that they would be able to blackmail him for favours. “You should let us have fun too.”
The next moment Naoya found himself thrown against the locker violently when Yuu’s deadly fist collided against his jaw, ensuring that at least two or three teeth broke from the vicious impact.
“You were saying something?” Yuu asked, cocking up a finely trimmed eyebrow.
Without another word, Naoya clutched his bleeding mouth and immediately slouched off to join the rest of the gang. He finally understood why everyone feared their boss and decided that the raven wasn’t someone he should mess around with if he valued his life.
“Yutaka.” Yuu called to the only remaining person except for Kouyou and Takanori. Yutaka immediately followed the raven without another backward glance, as if nobody existed behind them.
As the mass of towering bodies disappeared from above Takanori’s petite form, Kouyou observed the brunet who had turned completely dishevelled. The small boy staggered and made his way to the wall. Upon reaching it, he slumped to the floor and immediately wrapped his thin, fragile looking arms around his legs to hide his face between them. The school uniform which was two sizes too big made him look even more vulnerable, and Kouyou couldn’t stop the new-found hatred towards his twin from engulfing his emotions. Takanori was just a new kid, he couldn’t have possibly done something to deserve this treatment. This was the first time he’d seen Yuu bully someone like that, or rather, take charge on his fellow gang members to teach someone a lesson. Kouyou didn’t like this at all.
For some reason, he felt like Takanori and himself were in the same boat.
Kouyou gathered himself from his half-crouching position and approached the new boy, who had curled himself up to a ball, shivering violently as a small, painful whimper escaped his throat and mingled with the humid air of the school corridor.
Takanori sat still on the floor as he sobbed his eyes out. The tiny brunet who had always been raised with lots of love and affection by his now dead mother had never known what it was like to be beaten up. Every inch of his bruised body screamed in pain. He hadn’t expected such a thing to happen to him. His father had promised that he would be safe here, but had it all only been lies? No one had helped him. No one had bothered to even try and stop those bullies. Was he going to face this kind of harsh treatment every single day? Mom save me, he pleaded.
The brunet turned his head to the side when he heard footsteps nearing him. Through his vision, blurred by the constant flow of tears, he could see a tall, blond whose face he couldn’t see clearly, walking towards him. Seeing the color of the stranger’s hair, Takanori was once again frightened, fearing that another of the delinquents had still been lingering behind in order to continue hurting him. “Please, please don’t hurt me. I will do anything you want, just don’t hurt me.” The petite brunet whimpered knowing that his body wouldn’t be able to stand any further violence. He was already on the brink of passing out.
The honey blond stopped dead in his tracks as he realized how traumatized the small brunet really was. Scrutinizing the other boy’s tear-stained face, Kouyou inwardly flinched as he noticed his lips swollen, bust open and bleeding. He didn’t understand what Takanori could have done to anger the gang on his very first day, but he was sure it wasn’t anything intentional. This school was a rough place for newcomers and he’d learnt that the hard way.
Kouyou fidgeted with himself for a while, trying to contemplate the situation and finally decided that he wasn’t going to leave the smaller boy alone. He crouched down on the floor, a few feet away from Takanori, and extended his arm towards the thoroughly shaken brunet with a small smile that didn’t reach his aureate eyes.
“Takanori, right?” Kouyou asked gently, letting his hand hover midair, waiting for Takanori to reach over to shake the appendage on his own accord.
Takanori stared at the strange blond for a while, being unable to register what was happening. He had expected that he would be either punched or kicked, instead he was being offered a hand of friendship. His fear still hadn’t left him, but then the boy’s voice was too kind to ignore and so after a moment, the petite brunet hesitantly reached a bruised hand forward in order to shake the offer of introduction.
“Yes,” Takanori whispered, tentatively shaking the blond’s hand, feeling somewhat relieved as he felt the warmth that sheathed the soft limb.
“Can you get up?” Kouyou asked, tears welling at the corner of his eyes, threatening to fall as a plethora of emotions engulfed him. The hatred towards his own brother, the insecurity of losing him, the pain of seeing the small boy in agony, the fear of having to stop seeing Hikari came back to him in tidal waves as Takanori offered a small affirmative nod.
“Do you think you need to go to Sister Anna?” Kouyou inquired again, helping the brunet up on his wobbly legs, only to end up wrapping his arm around the other boy’s small waist as Takanori nearly lost his balance.
“Well, you know what? I think I should take you to the nurse anyway.” The honey blond declared as he supported Takanori’s body with his own and started walking towards the infirmary.
Hikari couldn’t help but be concerned about Kouyou’s safety, every step taking her further and further away from her best friend. She knew that it was just Kouyou’s own brother the honey blond had gone to deal with, but she had to admit that she didn’t trust the Shiroyama boy. He might be Kouyou’s twin brother, yet there was something too intimidating about the raven haired male.
Thinking of Yuu took her back to the boy called Yutaka. She still couldn’t understand the reason behind the meaningful smiles she keeps receiving from the brunet every now and then, in classes, in corridors as they passed, from the furthest corner of the cafeteria. But she decided to leave it for now, because even though Yutaka seemed like a nice guy, he was apart of the gang that hurt Kouyou. And that was enough reason for her to hate him.
The petite girl tightened her jaw as her lips pursed into a thin line, considering between waiting for Kouyou by the music room as promised or going back to see if he was okay. Everything around her seemed to mock her helplessness, because all she wanted at the moment was to be by Kouyou’s side.
A strange throbbing headache appeared behind her eyelids and she raised her hands to massage her temples. Kouyou was taking too long for her liking, making her want to go back to check up on him. But then again, everything that she had to deal with at the moment wasn’t giving her any reason to think properly, so she took a detour to the cafeteria to grab some coffee in order to ease the pain of the dreadful headache.
Hikari wrapped the warm styrofoam cup in her palms, relishing the warmth that radiated from it and took a small sip. The warm liquid ran down her parched throat as she released a soft sigh. Her head felt a little lighter. She decided to wait for Kouyou for a little longer, as she didn’t want to cause any more trouble for her friend by interfering.
She was too indulged in the feeling of caffeine running through her veins and her worries concerning Kouyou’s safety that she completely overlooked the flock of girls who made their entrance into the cafeteria, dressed up a bit too extravagantly for institute rules, their uniforms shorter and tighter than the regular ones and the necklines of their shirts revealing the not-so-subtle crease of their shapely chests.
They wouldn’t have cared about a small girl walking around, if Hikari hadn’t been in a haste and collided with the girl in front of the group. Spilling her coffee in the white uniform shirt of Watanabe Junko.
Junko watched in horror as the school uniform which she had designed herself to fit her drop dead gorgeous body stain brown due to the coffee that the dumb black-haired girl had emptied onto her shirt. Luckily, she was wearing her white undergarment, saving her skin from being scalded due to the hot liquid’s impact. Still, it was unforgivable that she, the female boss of St. Michael Academy had been humiliated by filth like Miura Hikari. Junko flipped her bleached hair as she scrutinized her victim. Sure she knew that Hikari would never be as bold as to spill coffee on her, the girl was nothing but a coward, so Junko was aware that it was an accident. But to the blonde, this was a golden chance to harass the living daylight out of the petite girl.
Hikari stared at Junko’s face with utmost horror, her mind reeling as she remembered the other encounters with the bitchiest girl in school. Never had she escaped Junko’s claws unsheathed and she was already formulating the worst case scenarios in her mind, none of them very pleasant.
She wondered why it was like this, why people like herself and Kouyou were the subjects of utter dislike to most of the people in school. She knew that she wasn’t in any way cool, or even strong. But as far as she knew, she didn’t deserve to be treated this way. She wished Kouyou was there, at least she’d have some support because the way Junko was staring her down, making her feel like a deer caught in headlights and her pipsqueaks displaying meaningful smirks, she knew she wasn’t going to get out of this mess safe and sound.
But Kouyou had his own dilemmas, his own life almost at the verge of breaking down, so Hikari made a firm decision to stand strong and like always sealing her mouth, so as to not spill a single word about this to Kouyou.
She wondered what she should do to ease it up on her, and thought starting with a simple apology should do the trick, but she just wasn’t about to bend her head to Watanabe Junko. Junko could beat the crap out of her, but she wasn’t about to give that bitch the satisfaction of earning an easy ‘sorry’.
“Well, well look what the cat brought in,” Ine Ayane, brown hair with ugly white streaks, Junko’s right hand lady, drawled lowly, making Hikari flinch. The other girl, who Hikari recognized as Chika cackled maliciously seeing their victim’s frightened face. The girls were already eager to swoop down on their prey and beat her black and blue. “Bitch.” Ayane screamed, her face turning red. “How dare you stand silently after spilling that shit on Onee-sama’s expensive shirt. Get down on your knees and apologize.”
Hikari pursed her lips in distaste as Junko stood up straighter with her hand on her hips and her waist bending to the side, flipping her hair in pure mockery and to Hikari, she looked like one of those bitches from old movies.
“It was an accident.” The black-haired girl spoke out boldly, completely aware about the outcome her bluntness was going to bring her.
Hikari wasn’t very surprised to find her ponytail being grabbed painfully the next moment, enough to be ripped off her scalp by none other than Ayane, as Junko took the last few steps forward, her breath dancing over Hikari’s flushed face, making her cringe.
“Ne, Hikari-chan,” Junko laughed softly, revealing her pearly, pointed teeth as she stared intently at the petite girl’s face. Her sharp nose wrinkled in distaste as she breathed in Hikari’s scent. The girl smelled of jasmine, a plain scent which always made Junko want to gag. Which century was this ridiculous girl in, she thought as she continued to look at Hikari’s face that was currently contorted in pain. Ayane was known for her ridiculous display of strength, so it was no surprise that tears were already streaming down their victims stygian orbs. “Aren’t you being very brave today?” Junko breathed as she raised one of her perfectly plucked eyebrows.
The much smaller girl grit her teeth to avoid any painful noises to escape, but still, she couldn’t stop the transparent drops of tears from spilling down the corner of her big, dark eyes that squinted into narrow slits. Hikari reached behind her head to wrap her hand over Ayane’s painful grip, trying hopelessly to ease the pain a bit.
“Say sorry to Junko Onee-sama.” Ayane hissed in her ear and pulled at the dark waterfall of her ponytail, causing Hikari’s body to bend in an arch.
“I won’t!” Hikari retorted as she gave a violent jerk in order to free her hair from the death grip of the other girl, but that only earned her more pain, as the grip only tightened and Ayane grabbed one of her hands to bend it awkwardly behind her back.
Hikari’s blood ran cold as a mischievous smile appeared on Junko’s sharp, feline face.
Junko couldn’t help but be impressed with Hikari’s boldness, but the courage which she displayed was not in her favour, and Junko was dead intent on making the raven-haired girl’s life as miserable as possible. It had been so long since the blonde had had any kind of fun, and Hikari was happily providing it for her. The shirt wasn’t actually a big deal. Junko owned at least a dozen of them, courtesy to her parents who were successful doctors. But still, who was she to pass on a chance for bullying a helpless girl when it was so readily served on a silver platter?
The walls of the cafeteria echoed with Ayane and Chika’s maniacal laughter. There was no one in the cafeteria as classes had resumed ten minutes ago, and the academy was very strict about students attending their assigned classes, so except for the one or two students indisposed to attend classes, there was nobody in the empty cafeteria. The female bullies were given completely free reign, as there was no possibility for any of the teachers to walk in on them.
Ayane pulled at Hikari’s ponytail making the poor girl cry in pain. Her pale face was raised, making Hikari face the alabaster ceiling. A malicious smirk, devout of any pity or sympathy formed on Junko’s pink glossed lips before she raised a well manicured hand and slapped Hikari so hard that the poor girl’s head was thrown to the side. Hikari screamed, making her receive another cruel slap.
This time Junko pulled at the hair on the petite girl’s crown and pulled her forward. Her lips touching the blonde’s coffee-stained uniform. “Lick it, bitch,” Junko crooned. “I believe you were desperate to get some caffeine into your system, right? So drink it from my shirt.”
The raven haired girl screwed her eyes shut as she realized that there was no way out of this mess. She could have just said sorry and gotten away with it, but thanks to her ego she was stuck in a bigger mess and the tears that she tried to hold back started falling once more, not because she was in pain, but because of the humiliation that was being bestowed upon her.
Ayane cackled madly and thrust Hikari’s head upward so that her eyes were on level with Junko’s chest. She couldn’t believe this was actually happening. She still tried once more to wiggle out of the confining grasp, and as a result, she found herself sprawled on the floor on her face.
Junko’s leg kicked her none too gently at her side, resulting a pathetic whimper that escaped her lips. Hikari tried to pull herself up, supporting her weight on her palms. Her hair had come loose, sprawling on her back in a dark, silky waterfall, something Junko couldn’t achieve with all the money spent on hair salons.
Hikari grit her teeth, preparing herself for the next blow. But it never came, instead a panicked scream from a oh-so-familiar voice startled her.
“What’s going on? Hikari!” Kouyou’s big doe eyes widened in shock as he entered the cafeteria. He had taken Takanori to Sister Anna and even though the sweet nurse had asked the shorter boy to stay in the infirmary for a while, Takanori had promptly refused to. He felt insecure in this new place which felt so alien and eerie. The only sane person he’d met since he had step foot in the academy was Kouyou. He didn’t want to detach from the honey blond.
After taking some painkillers, and the bruise on his lips tended with antiseptic, the brunet had followed his new friend like a blind man. Kouyou had asked him if he was hungry, to which he had shamefully admitted that he was. He couldn’t really thank the Takashima boy enough for escorting him to the cafeteria.
Neither of them were prepared for what they were witnessing. Kouyou had dashed all the way to the middle of the hall where a tiny girl lay sprawled on the floor, and even from the distance, Takanori didn’t miss the tear stains that glistened on her flushed cheeks. The brunet watched as Kouyou hurriedly gathered up the petite girl in his arms and cast death glares to the other girls who seemed to be enjoying the show.
“Who are you?” Junko sneered as she looked at the strange blond-haired guy who glared at as he held the Miura girl in his arms. The blonde who almost always occupied herself in drawing up schemes for taunting her victims, compromised of girls, never bothered with knowing anything of the boys except for the ones her underlings always talked about. “You’re a brave one, blondie,” she drawled. “Because none of the guys have enough balls as to openly go against me.” She flipped her hair again and turned to Ayane. “Who is he?” she whispered to the girl’s ear.
“You don’t know him, Onee-sama.” Ayana answered in a hushed whisper. “He’s Yuu-sama’s twin brother.”
“Yuu-sama?” Junko giggled, suddenly turning all girly as a light pink dusted on her cheeks, a really rare sight. Junko, the object of many of the male students’ wild fantasies, treated every male like vermin and acted as if she was untouchable. But when it came to Yuu, her ultimate crush, she was willing to lose everything for him. Junko was Yuu’s biggest fangirl and she even had a fan club solely for the underworld boss of St. Michael’s Academy. Of course, due to Junko’s scary and possessive nature and her nasty taste for revenge, none of the girls even bothered to approach the dark yet mysteriously alluring Shiroyama Yuu.
Junko snapped out of her Yuu-land as she scrutinized Kouyou with a nasty leer on her thin lips. “This thing is Yuu-sama’s twin brother? The one who Yuu-sama is trying his best to protect?”
Kouyou was too preoccupied with a trembling Hikari in his arms, who was at the brink of crying, and it broke his heart. Hikari was confident and strong, it wasn’t like her to be like this, and the honey blond didn’t know what to do. It had always been him needing Hikari’s support, her assurance, so when their roles just swapped like that, all he could do was hold the disheveled girl in his arms as strongly as he could. But then again, he realized that the other girls who seemed to be the reason behind all this were discussing about him and Yuu. He perked up his ears and caught the last phrase that left Junko’s lips, that Yuu was trying to protect him.
Out of everything that could happen, he didn’t expect to come across this revelation. Yes, Yuu used to protect him, had used to care about him when they were little kids, but his twin had changed after his therapy in the mental institute, didn't he? This Yuu didn’t even know about the raging storm that ravaged Kouyou’s beating heart every single day. Yuu never protected him, and he was positive that the raven found it pleasing to see him hurt and tormented.
Kouyou released a mocking smile and replied to the fraudulent comment.
“Yeah?” Kouyou laughed. “If my brother did care about me, then he wouldn’t let you harm the person I care for her. If he did want to protect me, then you wouldn’t be talking to me like this in the first place. So stop lying.” Kouyou was surprised by his own boldness. He had never talked like this to anyone before. But maybe, it was due to the fact that he had finally realized he was alone in this world, with no one to defend or protect him. Yuu had already gone beyond his reach, so it was about time that he learned how to protect himself. It was about time he learnt to be independent.
As soon as Kouyou was finished with his speech, Junko, Ayane and Chika broke into raucous laughter, which caused the blond’s eyebrows to furrowed in confusion. “Did you hear him Onee-sama?” Chika cackled. “Did you hear what he just said?” she fell to the ground on her knees, clutching her tummy, unable to hold back her laughter.
“You really are full of yourself, aren’t you?” Ayane laughed cacophonously while Junko kneeled in front of Kouyou and brought her face so close that their noses where only inches apart. Kouyou backed away, slightly uncomfortable with Junko’s closeness.
“What was that, pretty boy?” Junko asked with a malicious tone to her voice. “Did you say that Yuu-sama isn’t protecting you? Why do you think someone like you is alive in a place like this in the first place?” she giggled, clearly amused by this entire situation.
Kouyou furrowed his perfect eyebrows in confusion at what the girls were saying, half of which he couldn’t understand. He perfectly knew that Yuu hated him to the core as his older twin never held back on making it obvious to Kouyou that his life would have been better with the honey blond out of the picture, and he was right too. The blond was the reason why Yuu had a dark seal imprinted to his pure soul. He was the reason why Yuu had been subjected through horrible nightmares when he had just been nothing but a child.
Still, Kouyou had tried his best to make Yuu understand how much he loved him. He had done everything in his power to let his beloved older twin know that he was the most important person in his life. But then it had only resulted in failure and further hatred. Kouyou had always believed that Yuu would be happy to see him die. But now, these girls were saying otherwise. It wasn’t true, right?
“Ne, Ayane.” Chika chuckled, her entire face contorted in her malicious amusement. “Do you remember what happened to that stupid fuck Daijiro for punching Duck-boy?”
“Right,” Ayane nodded her head as she tapped her chin with her index finger. “Yuu-sama kicked the shit out of him so badly, that he had no choice but go to the nurse lady. Daijiro was whimpering the entire time, afraid that Yuu-sama might come back to murder him.” The brunette with jagged white streaks in her waxy hair laughed mirthlessly.
And that triggered the memory Kouyou would rather forget. He remembered how he had been about to get punched and reduced to a bloody mess. But it had never happened because Yuu had intervened. The blond had assumed that Yuu got bored of having the shit beaten out of him, because he had been looking for something more fun. But then he remembered the crazy, panicked look Daijiro threw at him back in the cafeteria when he and Hikari had gone to get lunch later that day. Could it be...?
Kouyou unconsciously tightened his hold around Hikari’s body as his pretty lips pursed into a thin line.
“See, Kouyou.” Junko cooed. Goose bumps erupted on Kouyou’s alabaster skin as the sound of the blonde’s mocking voice reached his sensitive ear drums. “You are left unharmed in this academy because everyone fears Yuu-sama. Yuu-sama warned every rule-breaker that if they dare lay a finger on his precious twin, then he would castrate their balls and let them rot in a dumpster.” she stated as she stood up. Ayane and Chika immediately flanked themselves on either side of her. “Personally, I wonder why Yuu-sama is bent on protecting someone like you, but well it doesn’t matter. I really don’t care, if Yuu-sama wants to protect you, then I respect his wishes.”
She turned around and started retreating away from the trio, along with her cronies. “And Hikari-chan,” Junko called from the exit, her posture stiff and her tone snide. “You better pay the laundry charges for my shirt.” she ordered briskly, the threat in her voice clear, before cackling as she headed back to her class.
